I just listened to the new album and i mean really guys, what was going through your head when you were writing/recording this? You do realize what youve done, right? Let me list it out for you:
-To top this album youll need to be working nonstop on one for the next 12 years
-My friends will have to put up with me playing this album nonstop, really loudly for the next 6 months
-Other good bands are going to break up because they know they have no chance of ever creating something this awesometastic
-Im probably going to be late for work because i cant stop listening to this and i cant take it in the car
...just to name a few
So thanks guys, because of you, for the next six months i have to listen to nothing but MCS, damage my hearing, and lose my job.
...But im ok with that
Album Kicks Amazing Ass!!! See ya on tour this summer

Re: My Dinosaur Life
I don't know what to rate this album, and here's why:
I Am The Movie was hard hitting, gritty and talked a lot about medicine and human nature, something that is constant across all Motion City Soundtrack's albums. Love it to f***ing death.
Commit This to Memory, the first album produced by Mark Hoppus, managed to put a little more polish on the signature MCS sound while keeping it fresh and branching out to unknown territory. It took advantage of the use of melodies in feedback and subtleties in the guitar work. Even the fact that it had a song in 3/4 time made me pee a little, and the bridge in the middle of Time Turned Fragile had me giddy to learn the drum part. It was different, it stood out, it was just eargasmic all around. The melodic feedback shows up a little more in My Dinosaur Life than in Even if it Kills Me, but let me further explain.
Even if it Kills Me went a little further, a little softer, and still had a sound I came to expect from MCS. f***ing loved that album also. Not much to say about it...it was just another really good record that showed they weren't afraid of change.
My Dinosaur Life again shows the band wants to explore new territory, again with producer Mark Hoppus. Now here's why I won't give it a 5/5, but maybe a 4/5 as compared to the other albums...they achieved the heavier balls to the wall sounds...but rhythmically it's...not as good as the other albums. It's not as frantic as Movie or Memory, even "Stand Too Close" doesn't hold a candle to "Last Night" or even "Together We'll Ring in the New Year".
That doesn't go to say I don't like the album, I pre-ordered the deluxe edition because I knew it'd still be a good album. Compared to the last ones though, it just sounds like something is missing; it seems that even though they had all the tools at their disposal they had for Commit This to Memory, they seemed stifled or maybe rushed. The fact that Tony recorded drums last could have something to do with it, I don't know how the writing process went with a drummer with 1 arm, but f***ing kudos for still putting together a finished product that in the end is still pretty f***ing good.
In short my point is, although there *are* synth parts, they're not as prominent in this album as past ones. There are *different* synth sounds at that, so that's cool they explored a little further. I don't know what it is, but this album is missing something. It seems like rather than catchy lead guitar riffs that stand out it's mostly just strumming chords with nothing to carry or lead the songs. Maybe that's the effect of trying to get a heavier sounding album, more chugging and less screaming licks. Again, it's not that the guitar work in this album is *bad*, it just feels like it's missing something.
If you skipped all my ramblings until here, the best songs in my humbled opinion are Delirium (also Mark's favorite, I think?), Hysteria and The Weakends...The Weakends is probably the closest song to Don't Call it a Comeback, and that's why it's my favorite. It's the hardest hitting song since the first album and I think I had to change my underpants when I heard it.
Last observation! The one thing I appreciate the most across ALL Motion City albums is the lyrical content. I could never put on paper half the things running through my head in the way that Justin does, he is a brilliant f***ing guy. That said, he delivers again on this album. I love everything about the lyrical content, especially the fact that this album's theme isn't primarily about girls. I like a lot of bands that talk about relationships and whatnot, including Blink, but it's nice to see someone talk about human nature and behavior and be able to do it in such a way that it's like a character being developed in a movie.
Bottom line: If you like Motion City Soundtrack, buy this motherf***ing album, or get the f*** out and leave these sensitive homeboys alone! You won't be disappointed! I'm not bashing the album, I'm just being honest.
Re: My Dinosaur Life
Just bought the Cd.... as i would expect from anything it is purely amazing. Lyricism is amazing and hits hard. Great sound and even better vocals. definitely going to be up high in the list of 2010 music.
BEST ALBUM OF 2010
2010 can't get any better than this. I am so in love with this album. It is perfect.
I have been listening to it on their myspace since they put it up. I can't buy it till tomorrow, but I know that after that My Dinosaur Life will be the only thing I will listen to. I don't know how I'm going to go through the school day without listening to it.
I was a bit worried about the vocals when I first hear the "Disappear" single because Justin's voice was so raw in comparison to past songs. But as soon as I hear "Her Words Destroyed My Planet" I was in love. I mean this song belongs with "The Future Freaks Me Out", "Everything Is Alright" and "This Is For Real"
I don't give a care if the band thinks that "Even If It Kills Me" was a bad album, because I f***ingg love that album. I just need them to know that it was a good album, and not to talk down about it.
Anyways, I think My Dinosaur Life is one of the best albums that has been released in a long time. Can't wait to hear it live.
Re: My Dinosaur Life
Alright, well to start off, I'm pretty glad you guys returned to an earlier style of your's. It works well, and makes me smile when I listen to it. I had heard a while back about a new album in the works from Justin himself in a KC hall in Southern Iowa. And here it is.
I really enjoyed Worker Bee. I just graduated high school a few days ago so I really felt connected to this. I've worked hard and I feel like I deserve a gold star too. :] Also, your use of the f-word in @!#?@! makes me happy. Not to mention I always like your subtle references to alcholism in your songs.
Forever a Fan,
<3
P.S. I feel like you guys should check out Iowa City, IA sometime in late 2010. Just a suggestion...
Re: My Dinosaur Life
Love it!
Re: My Dinosaur Life
Well in my opinion this cd is f***ing amazing. A most definite 10 out of 10 in my book. . And thats saying alot. Now time for the track by track breakdown.
Track 1: Worker Bee:
Great intro song. It totally screams McS's style in Commit This To Memory. But it also has that great vibe that you would get from songs like "The Worst Part" and "Cambridge". The lyrics in this song totally set you up for the rest of this album.
Track 2: A Lifeless Ordinary (Need A Little Help):
Now this song reminds me more of a "I Am The Movie" style. But thats just me. It really strikes me back to what they did with "Modern Chemistry". And the lyrics show so much of what most people go through. It shows that Justin doesn't just find words and just put them together to make a song. And the guitar just totally brings this song to it top.
Track 3: Her Words Destroy My Planet:
LOVE THE MOOG. Its fantastic. The lyrics and music throw a whole new, but yet amazing McS. And you gotta love em' for it. It also show the struggle some people go through after you loose that one that totally completes you. Everything about this song is perfect. The Riffs in this song make so happy and easy to listen to. But then they can bring it right back into the mood they want. I know for a fact that the video makes no sense but the lyrics do.
Track 4: Disappear:
Hands down new favorite song, and video. This song is so dark yet has those lyrics that draw you in. They put this song together so well. I love the guitar breakdown, and then the "You'll never know how it feel's" and tthen how it drops down for almost a suspenseful add on. And then shoots you right back up into it. Almost like a scary movie.
Track 5: Delirium:
I love the intro too this song. It has so much of a catch that makes you wanna dance in your seat. The bass line in the back totally adds to it too. I love the chorus. Its quite amazing. They do such a change up in this song that its almost impossible to get bored. And you wanna hum the beat in your head over and over. "I touched it once, I touched it a second time", to me its more like "I've listened to it once, I listened to it a second, third fourth time, and i still love it.
Track 6: History Lesson*:
This song is so interesting to hear after listening too McS for so long. Justin does a whole new thing with his vocals that make you want to imitate them. I mean he sounds like he is having so much fun. Then they break it down to softer beat, then right up into a solo. To me it sounds perfect.
Track 7: Stand Too Close:
Ah the clapping song is what i like to call it. Cause the amazing clapping that they added to the intro. There is something about this song that makes you get lost into a whole new world of McS. You want to clap along with the song, even though nobody else would be. And then how they bring the sound up right at the end. And two guitar solos. its just great. And the acoustic guitar totally works for this song.
Track 8: Pulp Fiction:
This song reminds me of some weird play production a high school would come up with. But its got that catchy beat and intro that catches your attention right away. The lyrics of this song are OUTSTANDING. This song is my second favorite song on this album. Its so fun to listen too. God Damn These Killings Are Gorgeous.
Track 9: @!#?@!:
For starters GREAT SONG TITLE. And the intro makes you move. Especially when they add the Moog. And the first line is great. In early 99 i beat the Ocarina Of Time. And for those who don't know that is my favorite game of all time. Thats right Justin and I have something in common. "You all need to go away, you mother f***ers". Ok i don't know about you but that is amazing. "You God Damn Hypocrites". And I love this ending "You all need to leave me and my homeboys alone, word"
Track 10: Hysteria:
Hysteria Hysteria its happening again. Ah gotta love it. And Jesse tears up that Keyboard. I love it. This song makes me have random Montagues. its great. And The random guitar part before the verses, just totally shoots you for a happy loop. This song is amazing. They have to make a video for it.
Track 11: Skin And Bones:
This intro just totally goes off into a whole new area of thought. "Will we be alright left alone tonight?". This song makes you ask that simple question as he sings it over and over. You wanna know that as you listen to every second of this song. This almost reminds me of a couple. If you can catch what i mean. Nut thats just my opinion on this song
Track 12: The Weakends:
This song starts off strong, and just keeps going with it. This song shows so much passion. You can feel every word he sings its just ecstatic. "Fight Back In The Pouring Rain." This song just screams McS in a nutshell. They always end with a great song. "I Am The Movie"- "A-OK", "Commit This To Memory"- "Hold Me Down", "Even If It Kills Me"- "Even If It Kills Me", and now "MY DINOSAUR LIFE"- "THE WEAKENDS"
I've listened to this Cd for almost four hours strait. And i can keep going. Its just that great. This Cd was so well put together. I'm so glad they released their fourth major album. If this Cd doesn't hit number one on charts i will truely be shocked. Without a doubt most looked forward to album.
my favorite band never lets me down!
LOVE LOVE IT!
i'm so happy you guys put out a new album, it makes my ears happy and my mouth smile!
hopefully you guys decide to come back to SPOKANE, WA soon, i wanna see you again!
Re: My Dinosaur Life
I have been a hard core MCS fan for ever from jamming out to every album, going to every concert I can, and filling my walls with lyrics and pictures but this album had blown my mind away. I can't even put words to what i feel about this album but i absolutely love it. The energy, honesty and aggression put into the lyrics and instrumentals in this album is invigorating and inspiring. I saw MCS in Milwaukee with Weezer and in Minneapolis this past weekend and i'm still is aw from both concerts.
Major props to you guys!!
Re: My Dinosaur Life
I Never thought that I would ever find an album half as good as Commit This To Memory, but my favorite band does it again. From the rawness of Disappear to the humor of @!#?@!, this is amazing.
Re: My Dinosaur Life
♥!
How is the piano?
Dinosaur?
Why?
Re: My Dinosaur Life
So, this album is probably the best thing that ever happened to me. btw I saw them at Clutch Cargo's and I was on the barricade with my best friend and my boyfriend and we all had a, WHAT, amazing time!!! They are sooooo much better live! If you don't have this cd, BUY IT!
or they will hate you
Re: My Dinosaur Life
Greatest Album of 2010 hands down!!!! Great music! It reminds me of weezer's blue album and that was an amazing album. I think it is even better than the blue album. And weezer is my favorite band but you guys are starting to become my favorite. Keep up the awesome work!!!!!
Re: My Dinosaur Life
I can only put it thusly, MDL expands on the AMAZING lyricism that I fell in love with MCS for. Aside from History Lesson, this CD has an obscenely high amount of plays in my iTunes, and, it's official that if someone wrote a song about my life, I'd want to me MCS.
Re: My Dinosaur Life
Every song on this album is damn near perfection. I don't think there is a lyric on here that doesn't fit my life to a tee(hee-hee). This soundtrack set my city in motion(lawl). It has inspired me to begin writing again.
Re: My Dinosaur Life
damn this album is the boom!!! can't wait for more!!!!!!!!
-_-
Re: My Dinosaur Life
HEAR ME OUT! This CD at first i was really dissapointed with. I was expecting the same advancement from Even If It Kills Me to My Dinosaur Life as Commit This To Memory to Even If It Kills Me. So i was not happy at first. But, no joke, these songs are AWESOME! I love it! I takes some getting used to, its not the usual Motion City that we are used to, but it is really great.
Re: My Dinosaur Life
totally worth waiting for!
Re: My Dinosaur Life
Re: My Dinosaur Life
I must admit, my last review was premature. Long story short, ignore it, buy the album. It delivers in every way. That is all.
Re: My Dinosaur Life
Great Album
They just need to come to South Carolina.
Yay For Funny Documentaries!
Looove this album. So much I made a poster of it myself and stuck it up on my wall in placement of my Pokemon Poster (it took four hours). I hop[e you guys know you make me do these things.
Songs are great, none below four stars for me. Best album by far...but, the problem? There are no drum tabs on the Web!!! Wahhhh!!!
I can't play Her Words Destroyed My Planet all by myself, can I? Help Tony!, help!! Pleeeease? If you do I'll send you a mail-order cookie (mmmmm mail-order cookie...)
My final words are, eat fruit, stay well, tour with Silversun Pickups, and remember, keep making great music and employing Joe Ledbetter!

Re: My Dinosaur Life
I have loved MCS ever since I was little, most likely thanks to my older sister's influence, but none the less I really love this music. My Dinosaur Life is sort of different from their older stuff, maybe a bit more mellow in some of the songs(I hesitate to say that, as Motion City Soundtrack is not the average definition of the word) but still keeping the place of one of my all-time favorite bands.
